The Ethics of Business

The Office: Youtube Video - The Office - ‘Business Ethics’ in 60 Seconds

Is business ethics an oxymoron?

Because we are in Alberta, lets look at the Alberta Oil Sands:

I have already reported on this at my personal blog myexplosion.net.

Alberta’s Oil Sands are the source of much debate. One must ask themselves several questions. Should we sacrifice our environment for economic gains now? Will the money earned now be worth more later? Who should be responsable for developing the refining technologies.

The Alberta government recently reduced royalties by 1.4 billion. You can read about that in the Financial Post article “Alberta takes $1.5B hit in slashing royalty rates” by Carrie Tait and Claudia Cattaneo; published: Tuesday, March 03, 2009.

The Alberta Government is enjoying the investment brought into the province. You can read all about it on their website Alberta’s Oil Sands.

So.. is the term Business Ethics and Oxymoron?   In Alberta, our own government wants the oilsands to develop even further.  However, who is responsable for watching the Ethics issues if the government is so “pro-oil”?

The businesses operating in the oil sands react to incentives like the one mentioned above.. so unless their is an incentive to be ethical, yes… the term is an oxymoron.
